The 150 % Rule of Group Assignments

Posted by Jim Clark on 7th October and posted in Education

No student may score higher on any assignment than 150% of the test grade covering that assignment.

First, how is the rule applied.

A student with a 10 of 10 (100%) on a lab gets a 10 of 20 (50 %) on the mid-quarter test which covers this lab. The student’s lab grade is reduced to 150% of 50% or 75%. The students lab grade is 7.5

The 150% rule is not a threat to any student who understands the material. 150% is a pretty forgiving percentage. It takes only a 50% on the test to support grades up to 75%. A 67% on the test will support 100% of any grade on an assignment covered by the test.

Nor is the 150% rule threatening to a student who does not understand the subject. It does inform the student that his/her level of understanding will support only such and such a grade… but the student may get lots of extra help and may retake the test any Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday after school or during a free period until the student gets the desired grade. Some students will retake the mid-quarter test four or five times before they get what they believe is a satisfactory grade
