Students Are Given the Freedom and Responsibility for Their Own Education

Posted by Jim Clark on 5th November and posted in Education

We believe that students are naturally curious and potentially enthusiastic about learning, thus we have tried to present an atmosphere in which students are given a great deal of responsibility for their own learning. We believe that enthusiasm is an outgrowth of natural curiosity, in an atmosphere of respect and responsibility, and may be stifled by petty rules designed to enforce excessive organization in the classroom. Thus we enjoy promoting situations in which students are doing many different things and have many choices and many responsibilities. One advantage to our grading policies is that the student is always right.

For a description of why the student is always right, see “The Student is Always Right or A Religion of Teaching Chemistry”.
