Chemistry Quiz Rules

0. Read rule 15 now.

1. When you wish to take a quiz,

a. obtain one from the classroom quiz repository, or from your teacher

b. write your name, the date, the period, the name of your chemistry teacher, and

c. present it to a chemistry teacher in order to get a data set or variables.

2. Quizzes must be taken in class in the period given or may extend into the next period if the student is unassigned during that period.

3. Quizzes that are not completed should be returned to a teacher to be discarded. A student may not decide not to take a quiz without notifying the teacher.

4. No notes may be used for quizzes except as described in rule 5. Neither may you use past quizzes to help you while you are taking a present one.

5. In general, the handbook may be used during quiz-taking, however any page in the handbook which deals with the main subject of the quiz may not be used for the quiz, as illustrated in rule 5a.

5a. For example, you may not use the rules for scientific notation on the first quiz, but you may use these rules for all later quizzes.

6. A student will receive a permanent grade of zero on any quiz in which the student has been found cheating.

7. Quizzes may be repeated over and over again. Only the grade on the last quiz taken counts towards your quarter grade.

8. Although the quiz atmosphere may appear to be a relaxed one, this does not suggest that there is any laxity in our expectations of your honesty.

9. In general, your teacher will attempt to grade your quiz in the period in which you take it, however the teacher will grade your quiz only if the teacher is not engaged in any other classroom activity. Grading of quizzes is of lower priority than teaching chemistry.

10. One practice that has recently gained in popularity among the most contemptible of students concerns the student who takes a quiz and subsequently ceases all functioning in the classroom until the quiz is graded. Such quizzes will not be considered for grading until the student returns to work. If the student does not return to work, the quiz will not be graded, ever.

11. Another practice that has recently gained popularity is the taking of virtual quizzes. A virtual quiz is not a real quiz, but rather a sort of pre-quiz or dress rehearsal. Students who are in the process of violating other quiz rules, especially those concerning rules 2 or 4, occasionally claim that they are taking a virtual quiz. A virtual quiz is one which has the words, “virtual quiz”, written at the top of the quiz by the teacher. Students may not assign themselves virtual quizzes.

12. Quizzes taken on the final day will not be graded in class, and thus, cannot be repeated. Therefore, you are advised to complete your quizzes early. Your grade can be reduced if you repeat a quiz on the final day.

13. One can usually divide a class into two distinct groups of students- those who take quizzes early in the quarter, who find the course lacking in stress and enjoy understanding the subject matter and the associated high grades; and those in the other group. The choice is, of course, yours.

14. We hope that you enjoy this technique. We are certainly open to suggestions and criticism.

15. You are in a closed loop. If you can figure out how to get out of it, you may continue with the rest of your life. Go back to rule 0, now.
